Anthony Childs The production choices (and perhaps prevailing influence(s) of the time) date this a bit more where the other albums FEEL more timeless. This legit sounds like Bill Laswell or Real World produced it and that's both good and occasionally excessive in the context of a PMW recording. Trying new things make it a fascinating listen, but for me over-produced & significant level of intimacy is lost. If you have Fête Foraine (and you should have it), you may understand my opinion. Favorite track: Everything Is Given to Be Taken Away.

Steven ODonnell I don't normally care for reissues but this... this is different: quite simply one of the most exquisitely beautiful records ever. So much dark and yet so much light. Those melodies, those lyrics... One can only wonder what the next Apartments album would have been if the universe had taken a different course...
Oh and those trumpets...

The worlds that I walked out on...
You think I'm happy, I'm In the same night as you
Could just fall apart again...

No Hurry 05:46
If you made a mess of your past… The days are gettin’ longer No we’ll never get away Someone slowed the whole world down Drive all day with my shirt off Baby crawls listening to Tricky Sit around eatin’ strawberries The days are getting longer Night comes down so late We're in no hurry Driftin’ along just like smoke Smell the rain that’s coming All the windows open wide We have no money Pile of shoes outside the back door The evening’s for our pleasure, friend Not measuring the loss Hmmm, no I’ll never get away I can’t stay here, forever I’ll never get away But forever, forever’s how it ends up all the time I got no ambition I sleep stay by the lazy river Someone slowed the whole world down In the old town called the past We’re in no hurry Whatever I'm sposed to do I’ll fix it up tomorrow If tomorrow, if at all Mmm, we’ll have a party Thought you might like to come Never get away Fix it up tomorrow If tomorrow, if at all We’re in no hurry I’ll fix it up tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow I’m in no hurry I’m in no hurry Fix you up tomorrow Do a little dealin’ to get by We have no money
3.
Could just fall apart again The sorta fix you’re in You could just fall apart again There’s nothing here to win Miss Lonelyhearts says You’re just bones and skin See them walking in wide-eyed, Exit wounded From Bridestown, coverin’ up the tears Oh you’d pick up the pieces of the things you ruined If you just knew where they'd gotten to And you say—where to now? And you say—where to now? They talked a little bit Then things went all quiet again What they have’s on the skids He depends on her, she depends on gin From best man to worst man With insults and nicknames I’m using—I’ve been this way before Betrayal turns each day to night How does a thing so wrong get to feel so right? Oh you’ll say—where to now? Oh you’ll say—where to now? Oh you’ll say it, say it—where to now? Oh you’ll say it Where to now? Where to? Where to? Where to? She rode the body in the train across Mexico
4.
Is this who we are now? Is this who we are now? The grass is bleached like skulls We’ll sleep on the rooftop tonight Put the sheets in the fridge for a while Catherine’ll come walkin’ in fresh from the bath Catherine’ll come walkin’ in smellin’ of soap and wine Something to live for There’s something to live for All day in disguise You’re only payin’ the bills The same old loss howls in your head Travellin’ man, travellin’ band The lights go out one by one A daddy does what he has to do The circus moved on Something to live for There’s something to live for Well I don’t know why it is But once you start runnin’ you never stop Your outlook was bloodshot Let’s say your prospects were dim Your only engine was grief Catherine comes walkin’ in fresh from the bath Catherine comes walkin’ in smellin’ of soap and wine Something to live for There’s something to live for There’s something to live There’s something to live for Live, live, live, live, live, live Something to live for There’s something to live for The same old loss howls in your head You learn how to wear the disguise You’re gonna wear the disguise Your only engine was grief I wonder what became of me, of you, of me Your outlook was bloodshot There’s something to live There’s something to live for To live for, to live for…

Infatuation, sadism, lust, avarice Possess our souls and drain the body's force We spoonfeed our adorable remorse Like whores or beggars nourishing their lice Our sins are mulish, our confessions lies We play to the grandstand with our promises We pray for tears to wash our filthiness Importantly pissing hogwash through our styes The devil, watching by our sickbeds, hissed Old smut and folk-songs to our soul, until The soft and precious metal of our will Boiled off in vapor for this scientist Each day his flattery makes us eat a toad And each step forward is a step to hell Unmoved, though previous corpses and their smell Asphyxiate our progress on this road Like the poor lush who cannot satisfy We try to force our sex with counterfeits Die drooling on their deliquescent tits Mouthing the rotten orange we suck dry Gangs of demons are boozing in our brain Ranked, swarming like a million warrior-ants They drown and choke the cistern of our wants Each time we breathe, we tear our lungs with pain If poison, arson, sex, narcotics, knives Have not yet ruined us and stitched their quick, Loud patterns on the canvas of our lives It is because our souls are still too sick Among the vermin, jackals, panthers, lice, Gorillas and tarantulas that suck And snatch and scratch and defecate and fuck In the disorderly circus of our vice There's one more ugly and abortive birth It makes no gestures, never beats its breast Yet it would murder for a moment's rest And willingly annihilate the earth It's boredom. Tears have glued its eyes together You know it well, my listener. This obscene Beast chain-smokes, yawning for the guillotine — You — hypocrite listener — my double, my brother, my sister

Most of my life has been so temporary Maybe I’m not worth it Don’t know why you'd trust me Baby baby baby—maybe I’m not worth it? Baby baby baby They say to keep a good thing going I never have, I never tried The worlds that I walked out on The rivergirls are gone now Friday rich, Saturday poor, I fall across the bedroom floor Baby baby baby—baby am I worth it? Most of my life has been so temporary Baby baby baby—baby am I worth it? Baby baby baby You wake up in other places The other side of nothin’ towns See me at my worst, you’d never want to know me Friday rich, Saturday poor Clothes across the bedroom floor Go ahead and ask me—baby, is it worth it? Most of my life, has been so temporary So temporary, so temporary The worlds that I walked out on Baby baby baby—baby, am I worth it? Baby baby baby They say to keep a good thing going, I never have, I never tried The world that I walked out on, the places and the houses Friday rich, Saturday poor Clothes across the bedroom floor Baby baby baby—baby, am I worth it? Most of my life Most of my life has been so temporary Baby am I worth it? Maybe I’m not worth it? The world that I walked out on The rivergirls are gone now When will this feeling fade? Most of my life… So temporary, so temporary

They live above the railyards Watch the lighted trains through the early dark With just enough to pay the rent Keep thinking they're gonna make it They never will, They never will make it What happens if the life that you’re in Turns and betrays you at last? No one is true Not even him and you You’re in a world of liars It’s a world of liars A smoky room, the jukebox plays "You’re Killing Me With Kindness" I fall for that, I always do Feel yourself going under That’s how it goes lately That’s how it gets lately You figured on some place in the world Those whiskey coloured nights That’s true, at least it is for you You’re in a world of liars It’s a world of liars People always at each other’s throats It proves how much you care Didn’t you care? Didn’t you care? Didn’t you care? In a world of liars The waterfront, the neon bars You know these places backwards A mess of fears hits on you That’s what you wake up with Once in a while Once in a while, maybe The same old hope in your heart every day Whatever happens to that? If no one is true, not even him and you You’re in a world of liars It’s a world of liars, liars, liars That’s how it gets lately That’s how it goes lately No one is true Not even him and you You’re in a world of liars It’s a world of liars, liars, liars Feel yourself goin’ under Feel yourself goin’ under Feel yourself goin’ under

Cheerleader 07:10
Six months of Winter With your junkie drawlin’ borin’ bastard friends Sure could use a pick-me-up tonight Sure could use Someone to pick me up and carry me I’m useless Well I’m the only cheerleader you’ve got O lucky girl If you can’t go on, go on I’ll help you up Look around at what you’ve got Not what you’ve lost I’ll help you bury your dead Your head is full of night I’ll help you bury your dead O lucky girl I’m the only cheerleader you’ve got I’m the only cheerleader you know She tears the matches from the book One by one Her story tells itself, her hair’s undone Changed address too many times, Too many towns I swear that disappointment Can always track you down Your self-pity song and dance All the chances in the world you’ve blown Your self-pity song and dance You inhabit a world of blown chances Six months of Winter in your eyes Six months of Winter in your eyes Six months of Winter in your eyes In your bones You had no feeling, Tell me how to keep it Who can beat the thing that beats them? There’s always something creeping out from your past I’m the only cheerleader you’ve got Changed address too many times I’m the only cheerleader Look around at what you’ve got Not what you’ve lost I’ll help you bury your dead If your head is full of night Six months of Winter Six months of Winter I could be I could be I could be your cheerleader tonight I could be I could be I could be six months of Winter Your cheerleader tonight I could be I could be I could be your cheerleader tonight I could be six months of Winter
11.
So tell me what comes after "The Big Sleep" Does longing stop? And are you never beat anymore? Is everything given to be taken away? Given to be taken away Walking by the harbour, the park Hear the foghorns calling through your dark Some time and place you couldn’t name You lost your feel for the game You’re nostalgic, before your time... So tell me what comes after The Big Sleep Do you dream of all the drums that never beat anymore? Was everything given to be taken away? Given to be taken away The lights go out around you one by one The crowds go home, the circus moves on Everything’s given to be taken away Given to be taken away, hey, hey... Ba ba ba-ba ba, ba ba ba-ba ba Ba ba ba-ba ba, ba ba ba-ba ba Well I heard of your withdrawal from the world There’s a rose that blossoms in the barrel For each lost little girl Was everything given to be taken away? Given to be taken away, far away Applause is in your bloodstream like a drug A game of make-believe with your barbiturate dolls A time and place you can’t name You lost your feel for the game Ba ba ba-ba ba, ba ba ba-ba ba You think that I'm happy? I’m in the same night as you Now your ambulance rides For your lost little girl Your ambulance rides No one will ever take you home Lost… I’m in the same night as you You think that I’m happy? You’re nostalgic I’m in the same night as you There’s a rose that blossoms in the barrel For the lost, for the lost, for the lost I’m in the same night as you I’m in the same night as you Everything’s given to be taken away
