Give nothing away, no dark confession She fled from everything she knew Came through alcohol to you Your saw that world, its fucking chances You know its every crummy room There are no tickets for the doomed This side of town you had forgotten Where all the melancholy Janes Just reminisce or go insane And the goodbye train, some of us Went on it for a while The goodbye train came along & Took you for a ride The goodbye train But you’re not lost or broken yet You’re not lost or broken yet This side of town you had forgotten Where all the melancholy Joes Along the river that you know Are fading fast, the cheap illusions Maybe a hundred towns ago They had a hundred kinds of hope They held out for the big tomorrow Always on the outside looking in The windows of the rich And the goodbye train, some of us Went on it for a while The goodbye train came along and Took you for a ride The goodbye train Where are you now? My dark obsession I walk the streets in dead man’s shoes Through smoke and rain to get to you Your bitterness, your disillusion You thought you’d die of loneliness Whoever loved you you’d just wreck You tear your dress, you tear your stockings You tear up everything we had Both the beautiful and bad And the goodbye train, some of us Went on it for a while The goodbye train came along and Took you for a ride The goodbye train You can’t give in, you can’t give in Not you, not you Sunny Jim...

Well they drove straight home in the sudden rain Thinking they’re in this spell where everything will work That it’s all fixed up, yeah it’s up between them They’re on a roll... oh but if the spell should break Don’t let loss surround you She looks for you on every corner Lonesomeness was sent to warn you both On every corner There’s no end to midnight in their lives How did they stray so far in this crooked world? They were gonna move to Tulip City, then Anna says “I wish that this could last... Let me walk you to the station” He looks for you on every corner Lonesomeness was sent to warn you both On every corner There’s a four-cat moon through the Judas trees My time has been and gone, it shines for me We gotta get up out of this dump we cling to We’re not fugitives... or maybe we just are And we just should have been grateful Well I’ll look for you on every corner Lonesomeness was sent to warn us both On every corner

Let her inside, says she’s been locked out all her life But you never let anyone get near See her disguise every hope that got betrayed All the tickets go nowhere now Heaven’s hidden, hidden. It disappeared But now, now, now, now Nothing stops it does it? Nothing stops it does it? Takes a hold, don’t let go of you Forget who it was, jumped from the ship at Vera Cruz Turned twenty five that day Well that’s just how I was I fell through a trapdoor and blacked out I didn’t own a feeling then Just a hollowed out ghost in your life But now, now, now, now Nothing stops it does it? Nothing stops it does it? Takes a hold, don’t let go of you It don’t let go, it don’t let go You will have to search everywhere You will never get past this desire Now, now, now, now Nothing stops it does it? Nothing stops it does it? Takes a hold, don’t let go of you

The place that you come from Only the world outside seemed real Kept on thinking you were trapped or haunted Every instinct said to flee Then you sold your rings and your records There the pretty story ends Everything just came and went You knew you couldn’t return It’s over, it’s over, it’s over for Caroline now You made it to Tombstone Took any room that was spare So now you’re beat, well just a little Was that what you said? You said “I remember when I thought I could have it all” Everything just came and went You knew you couldn’t return It’s over, it’s over, it’s over for Caroline now Regret hits you sometimes Then comes a morning when you can’t look back for anybody So much abandoned... Everything just came and went No one ever returns It’s over, it’s over, it’s over for Caroline now All the towns ago, all the things that mattered They came and went I can recall your name, I can recall your face

Knowing you were loved Wasn’t that the best thing that you ever had And watched vanish? Knowing you were loved Traded away your loneliness You thought you could never die You know those days that blur The stones of loving her Scenes that flicker in your head For days you thought of her You pray for things that were You’re nothing. Nothing but desire Knowing you were loved You will go from place to place Leave, then leaving never ends Knowing you were loved You go and hold down any job A world of bills, a run of jacks You know those days that blur The stones of loving her Scenes that flicker in your head For days you thought of her You pray for things that were You’re nothing. Nothing but desire Wasn’t that the best thing? Wasn’t that the best thing? Wasn’t that the best thing? You know those days that blur The stones of loving her Scenes that flicker in your head For days you thought of her You pray for things that were You’re nothing. Nothing but desire Wasn’t that the best thing? You could never die Scenes that flicker in your head...

Everywhere, everywhere, the night is long everywhere Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah Jacknifed and all washed up in Vaudeville Just mockingbirds and sleeping pills Afterglow of emptiness, liquor rushes, losing tricks What magic is there left in town? What magic? In places where the night is long All your little dreams, they can go wrong In places where the night is long Rachel changed her hair from blonde to black Knows she never will go back Stole her ticket for the trip, life she’s led you never really kick Can’t stand up. Can’t stand to be alone In places where the night is long All your little dreams, they can go wrong In places where the night is long You’d better move on Get out of there You’d better move on...move, move, move Sleepless. Snow drifts on the windowsill Suddenly the world is still The Neverland that’s your address No girl next door will ever get Who could rescue you? Who could understand? These places where the night is long All your little dreams, they can go wrong In places where the night is long All your little dreams Face it friend, you don’t belong I spent a lot of times lost... Everywhere, everywhere, the night is long everywhere

It’s a town full of dopes with grudges They’ll take out your eyes They’ll cut you dead and judge you Here poison runs wild Everyone wants someone to blame They say look what she’s done again & again They love to chatter, they love to chitter chatter All his stupid friends left you in the end All his stupid friends left you in the end We’re bad for each other sweetheart That’s part of the deal This thing that we killed for sweetheart Is all that feels real When will it stop? Well it’s not gonna stop It’s a merry go round, you’ll never get off I hope you’re happy. I hope you can be happy. All his stupid friends left you in the end All his stupid friends left you in the end Who would you ever trust again? I’m with you till the end, with you till the end...

Hurry, hurry, hurry... You hurry on through streets in the mist In the strung-out world of old memory Forgetting’s a gift A yellow rose or one white ribbon Some everyday little thing triggers this Could I hide here, a little while? It feels so good to get inside Well what else could I do? Bored with yourself, don’t feel complete In slow motion close your eyes. All rushes die You’re left with this need You milk your drama for all it’s worth Like you’re the only one who’s ever been this hurt Could I hide here, a little while? It feels so good to get inside Well what else could I do? Outside as the daylight fades You call her name, you’ve died a little ever since Well what else would you do? Could I hide? A little while? Could I hide? A little while? Oh could I, oh could I hide here, a little while? It feels so good to get inside Well what else could I do?

What’s left of your nerve... What’s left of your nerve... So now you’ll discover what’s left of your nerve You drift like a lost kite No place in the world It’s not what you’re used to, what lies ahead It’s not like the paperback books you have read The heat lies upon you, the January rain The back yards, the storms come again & again There’s no sanctuary... There’s no sanctuary... And my story’s the same, it’s just as pretty Well that’s what you get And my story’s the same, it’s just as pretty You threw things together in the wintry dark You packed your whole life in the back of a car Then you turned up angel, my innocent one With your suitcase of knives and your kid leather gloves One day I’m thinking—is your gentleness gone? The next time I see you, you’re skinning the dog You brought in the dark There’s no sanctuary... There’s no sanctuary... And my story’s the same, it’s just as pretty Well that’s what you get What’s left? What’s left? What’s left of your nerve?

Step outside, your childhood is a world you don't control You're not alone, I'm with you, honey, with you, girl Can’t you see? But I think about tomorrow when I close my eyes Think about all I'll lose and I wanna cry Stop, stop, stop I'm the staying kind Stop, stop, stop I'm the staying kind Staying kind Thought I'd see you through these months of life Or I never will see you at all I return to a kinder world The first time you call If I'm alone, I miss you funny, miss you good Can't you see that? Think about tomorrow and I close my eyes Think of all I'll lose and I wanna cry Stop, stop, stop I'm the staying kind Stop, stop, stop I'm the staying kind Staying kind You wanna cry You wanna cry Stay Please stay Stay I count to fifty Think about tomorrow when you close your eyes Think of all I'll lose and I wanna cry Stop Stop Stop Stop I'm the staying kind Stop Stop Stop I'm the staying kind Staying kind Stop, stop Stop, stop Stop Stop, stop Stop, stop Oh, stop
