Anna For a sad life filled with regret and loneliness. The Apartments continues to deliver on this new record; it's amazing how the inner turmoil seems to get more inspired with every fresh release. Favorite track: Write Your Way Out of Town.

Calle Falksten Another majestic record that soothes and caresses in equal measures and a solid proof that Peter Milton Walsh is indeed one of the greatest songwriters living today. Just go buy. Favorite track: Where You Used to Be.

Matthew Campbell I don't know how PMW maintains this high level of excellence album after album, but the man can write a song that sticks to the heart and turns through the mind in so many ways. This new album is straight up gorgeous. It leans towards melancholy, as The Apartments often do, but it is such a beautiful melancholy... Give me the same, please, day after day. This record is warm and soft and smart. An amazing entry into an already tremendous catalog. Favorite track: Where You Used to Be.

The Apartments "In and Out of the Light", CD, Digipack with booklet.

The Apartments highly anticipated seventh studio album, “In and Out of the Light”, follows a cast of characters who, in the aftermath of loss or simply the changes that turn up in everyone’s lives, have been looking for some other way to live—and found it.

A hypnotic, unforgettable set of songs, In and Out of the Light came together in a new way for The Apartments. Recording began in Sydney, at the end of winter, 2019. Working a few hours a day, one or two days a week, the album was finished in the summer, the final mix being completed the day before coronavirus lockdown hit Australia in 2020.

The songs took shape impressionistically across the recording days, with details of melodies, fragments of lyrics and hooks determining the form—a departure from the band’s usual way of the songs being built up from a bedrock of bass and drums.

Peter Milton Walsh and bass player Eliot Fish worked with producer Tim Kevin in his Marrickville studio in Sydney, while French Apartments, Natasha Penot and Antoine Chaperon, recorded their parts in various studios in France and English drummer Nick Allum worked in London.

In and Out of the Light features Chris Abrahams from The Necks on piano. The track, We Talked Through Till Dawn, was recorded live in one take with Peter singing while Chris played piano—the same way in which they had recorded an Apartments fan favourite, She Sings to Forget You.

With exquisite instrumentation, gorgeous harmonies and Peter Milton Walsh’s impressionistic storytelling, The Apartments have an album to get lost in—for a day, for a week, for a lifetime.

He was a running spring of fresh hopes, you wanted to marry him then You wanna start living again If I could, l’d put some blue sky in your head Five o’clock on a winter’s day, lamps on in every room You’re wishing your life away If I could, I would If I could, l’d put some blue sky in your head You were a running spring of fresh hopes, I don’t know how to begin I wanna start living again If I could, l’d put some blue sky in your head You were a running spring of fresh hopes, you had your pockets full of sunshine I had my hands full of rain If I could, I would If I could, l’d put some blue sky in your head Some of us will never have that Goodnight my city, goodnight my pretty Some fall in love, some fall in loneliness…

Whatever it was that went wrong, she poured it into sang Whatever it was that went wrong Write your way of town, write your way out of sorrow Years of running round had worn you out With your notebooks in a shoebox, mattress up on milk crates And the days repeating themselves Weil hold on, that’s all l’m asking you to do Hold on, I know l’m asking for a lot But hold on-this isn ’t final Write your way of town, write your way out of sorrow Could you write your way back to me some day? For a while the missing stops, then it just starts up again I don’t know how this ends Well hold on, that’s all l’m asking you to do Hold on, I know l’m asking for a lot Hold on-this isn’t final No feeling is final, just keep going Hold on… no feeling is final

Half of me is with you now, half of me is in the past Ask me about goals, you know I don’t have any Ask me about wishes you know I got plenty of them l’ve had plenty of them You built your life on those end of night choices You only trust those seen-it-all-before voices now Are you listening? There’s a hole in the world where you used to be There’s a hole in the world Summer’s here then summer’s done, remind me now of all that’s gone Summer comes and summer goes and the world we used to know Patsy Cline was playing in the park in the evening Patsy Cline was singing ’bout the pieces he left her in Are you listening? There’s a hole in the world where you used to be There’s a hole in the world Ask me about goals, you know I don’t have any Ask me about wishes you know I got plenty of them l’ve had plenty of them Half of me is with you now, half of me is in the past Half of me is with you now, half of me is in the past Are you listening? There’s a hole in the world Where you used to be, where you used to be…

That was your special gift- to take something good and make a mess of it l’d lost you, was in a daze, had to go and find myself some other way to live What’s beauty to do in the face of it all? What’s beauty to you? lt’s a light in the dark What’s beauty to do in the face of it all? lt doesn’t save anyone, doesn’t change anything Makes nothing happen yet happiness happens again That was your special gift- to take something good and make a mess of it l’d lost you, was in a daze, had to go and find myself some other way to live l’m all mixed up, l’ve never saved anyone l’d run through bullets for you but it never saved anyone I could find my way blindfold through the dark and the rain The feeling I had then I won’t get back again That was your special gift- to take something good and make a mess of it l’d lost you, was in a daze, had to go and find myself some other way to live… l’d lost you, l’d lost you Made a mess of me, made a mess of you Made a mess of me, made a mess of you lt’s a light in the dark, it’s a light in the dark, it’s a light in the dark What’s beauty to you? lt’s a light in the dark

Sha-la-la-la la la Sha-la-la-la la la Lucy the world has changed, l’m sorry we’re left behind You said the years were running out, so you changed your mind O Lucy the world has changed. We’re all fucked up Please don’t judge me now, there’ll be time for that You saved my life with a butterfly kiss I had so many troubles that nothing could fix Even the guy I was in Twenty Ten is a stranger to me now I know where we’re going now, the world of never again Every memory I have is a danger to me now O Lucy the world has changed, I’m sorry you’re left behind But it’s not such a bad thing if people were kind You saved my life with a butterfly kiss I had so many troubles that nothing could fix Instead of singing through the Summer I shoulda worked instead I went singing through the Summer, singing I went singing through the Summer, singing Singing through the Summer, I went singing I went singing through the Summer Jake, Jake, Jake-this is Chinatown… You saved my life with a butterfly kiss, so many troubles I just couldn’t fix I went singing through the Summer, then the Winter set in I went singing through the Summer, then the Winter set in When it’s gone, it’s gone… it’s gone, it’s gone Even the guy I was in Twenty Ten is a stranger to me now Even the guy I was in Twenty Ten is a stranger to me now So many troubles… a stranger to me now Every memory I have is a danger to me now Every memory I have is a danger to me now Every memory I have I went singing through the Summer… then the Winter set in

Sit there and stare at the rain on the window Sandy is singing… where does the time go? Well I turned up after she’d gone I look care of you. We talked through till dawn. You and I know it’s no country for old men The streets that we scored on, we’ll never go back Well I played all the broken down songs Stayed up with you after he’d gone Did the world let you down? Did the world let you down? Chaos and laughter, that’s what we went after You ran through your life like a cat in the rain And I played all the broken down songs I stayed up with you. We talked through the dawn. I made a thousand wishes and it got me nowhere Got me nowhere, got me nowhere, got me nowhere I made a thousand wishes and it got me nowhere Got me nowhere, got me nowhere Got me nowhere No, no, no, nowhere
7.
It’s a mystery to me now, what I ever saw in you I believed in your talent, I believed in your luck But it’s such a long time since I gave a fuck about you Don’t give a fuck about you anymore It’s a history of need now. l’m sorry that I ghosted you The nights that we had, the good and the bad What does it matter if I don’t give a fuck about you anymore? I know the troubles you stared down There are some you can’t defeat You got so good at giving up but no one’s as good as me… There was a time when I thought about you, there was a time I like living without you. Can’t you see l’m getting by? Except when l’m dreaming or drinking, breathing or sleeping Walking or talking I don’t give a fuck about you anymore You won’t be so sad anymore, it won’t be so bad anymore You won’t be so sad anymore, it won’t be so bad anymore…

They drove on through the fading light They drove on through the fading light What they’re looking for aint there anymore, the places no longer exist Looking good and going nowhere, that was the story of our lives You count the Springs, the Autumns too, you count the seasons left for you More behind than up ahead, more behind you now Her childhood towns all fog and rain, a past that calls her back again Her ups and downs and Saturdays, the rides she’ll never take again Our England’s gone and so are you Our England’s gone You don’t look back or regret it, the women in and out of your life Had the years made it better, all that waking alone in the night? Wanting you was a habit I was quitting and quitting again But I knew that it mattered and l’d always give in in the end Her life seemed stopped, her life seemed over, thirty three last October I’ve heard it all before you said, won’t someone put the moon to bed? More behind than up ahead, more behind you now Oh you were so unlike the rest, my North, my South, my East and West You were so unlike… the rest Driving down deserted streets, twilight filled with old defeats They drove on through the fading light Emily was left behind to find her way without you The ones we love are torn from us for no good reason They drove on through the fading light I’ll never leave you, that’s what I said I’ll never leave you They drove on through the fading light Won’t someone put the moon to bed?
